Alma Tapas Bar Review
The Walking Critic | Canggu, Bali | January 2025
The Alma Tapas Bar is both unassuming and unpretentious, radiating rustic Spanish charm with an understated confidence. The décor channels the Mediterranean spirit: think arched brickwork and vaulted ceilings, evoking a cozy trattoria or perhaps a tucked-away taverna on a Greek island. Behind the bar, dark wooden shelves brim with wine and spirits, while earthenware bowls hang decoratively from the walls. Add the presence of a live classical guitarist, and the scene is set — an authentic Mediterranean experience, albeit played out on the breezy pavements of Bali.
The Alma Tapas menu is a celebration in itself, smartly divided into four categories: Delicatessen, From the Land, From the Sea, and From the Garden. Each section offers mouthwatering creations — imaginative yet grounded — that showcase the team’s skill in delivering big flavours through small plates. It's the kind of menu that rewards curiosity and inspires repeat visits. Clever, indeed.
Equally impressive is the drinks list, which is no afterthought. In fact, many come here just for the drinks — and who could blame them? Cocktails are priced between IDR 85,000 to 125,000, which is more than fair considering the quality. Not only is it cheaper than back home in Australia, but it also stacks up very favourably against most other spots in the area.
And then there's the service — faultless. The staff are outstanding: attentive, warm, and intuitive without ever feeling intrusive. From front of house to the bar and table staff, everyone plays their part with seamless grace. At no point did I need to raise a finger or an eyebrow. They were just there, when and where you needed them. A rare thing, and a major reason why Alma earns my highest praise.
There’s no question: Alma Tapas Bar is one of Canggu’s most sought-after dining spots and watering holes — and for good reason. Come for the food, stay for the ambiance, and return because, like me, you won’t be able to stay away for long.
